| CATCHING UP WITH KELLIE SHE'S A LOT LIKE THE GIRL STEVE URKEL CHASES (AND CHASES AND CHASES . . .) By Brenda Herrmann. Chicago Tribune, June 15, 1993
"If he just changed a little bit - like got some better pants and changed that voice of his - he'd be OK," Kellie says during a moment of giggling girl talk. Kellie, 16, who plays Laura Winslow on the ABC Friday night hit "Family Matters," is lots of fun. She laughs, she giggles, she squeals when she's talking and she seems honest and modest. She even lets her guard down to talk about boys. "I like brainy guys," she says. "I like guys with goatees and glasses. I like the skinny, glasses type." Not that she goes for mild-mannered nerds, however. If she had a dream date with anyone, Kellie says, she'd pick rocker Prince, who is thin and goateed, though not bespectacled ('cept for sunglasses). Kellie got started in acting when she was 4. "I was so shy, I wouldn't talk," she recalls. "So my parents put me in a theater class every summer." She got over the shyness ("Oh yeah, I'm over that!" she says loudly) and found "Family Matters" when she was 12. "It's so weird to see yourself grow up on TV," she says. "It's amazing how somebody can change. When I started, I was sorta fat and short with my hair in a ponytail all the time. I can't believe I used to look like that." Kellie says she's pretty much like her character Laura. "The only difference that I can think of is that I don't have a Steve Urkel in my life," she says. As for nerdy Steve, who has been chasing Laura for years on "Family Matters," Kellie says you never know - he just might catch her. "On the show something might happen a few years down the line. . . ."
