KIDSDAY TALKING WITH Kellie Williams 1993

By Edward Kennedy, Geeta Laud and Mike Sohn. Kidsday Staff Reporters

KEYWORD HIT

We spoke with 17-year-old actress Kellie Williams, who stars as Laura on the hit ABC-TV show "Family Matters" at the Righa Royal Hotel in Manhattan.

Q. How did you get the part of Laura?
A. My dad made a home movie and sent it to California to producers Miller and Boyett from the show.

Q. Do you enjoy it?
A. Yes, because I get to be someone else.

Q. What got you interested in acting?
A. I was very shy when I was younger, so my parents put me into theater classes.

Q. Does your brother and sister respect you more now that you are an actress?
A. No. They don't listen to me now, and then didn't listen to me then. But we do get along well together.

Q. What grade are you in?
A. I am in 11th grade.

Q. Do you have a strict schedule?
A. Yes. I wake up at 7 a.m. and go to school. I do three hours of school, then go to the studio, and do two hours of rehearsing. I take a lunch break, then I do four more hours of rehearsing.

Q. Do you think the problems on the show "Family Matters" relate to real life?
A. A lot of the show's teenage problems are close to real teenage problems.

Q. What was the first time you appeared on TV?
A. It was a TV salute to Dr. Martin Luther King.

Q. What was it like being a runway model?
A. That was a long time ago, but it was fun.

Q. How do you like being idolized by so many young people?
A. I feel if young people can look to me as some kind of role model that is okay with me.

Q. How do you like the cast?
A. We are like a real family. We hang out at each other's houses.

Q. Is your neighborhood anything like your real neighborhood?
A. Not really, no. I don't have any Steve Urkels living near me.

Q. What is your favorite TV show?
A. "Home Improvement."

Q. What is your favorite sport?
A. Tennis, and I love the Chicago Bulls.

Q. Is your real family anything like your TV family?
A. No, not really.

Q. Are you friends with Jaleel White in real life?
A. Yes.

Q. What college do you want to attend?
A. I would like to go to Brown, Yale or Spellman.

Q. Do you act with your friends the same way as you do on TV?
A. Yes. We like going to the malls, hanging out, and talking on the phone.

Q. What message would you like to share with us?
A. I strongly believe in kids staying in school. I think all kids need a good education.
