Queen For A Geek

Meet Kellie Williams - Steve Urkel's "Snookums"
TV Guide May 1991

Being the object of obsession for TV's most popular nerd can be exasperating. Just ask 15-year-old Kellie Williams, whose main task as Laura Winslow on Family Matters is to give the romantic elbow to super-dweeb Steve Urkel.

"People always ask me, 'Is that boy really a nerd?' Even my friends do that. I ask them, 'Don't vou want to know about me?' I just got off the plane from California!,'" wails Williams, who commutes between Los Angeles and her Maryland home. But, she adds quickly, "If I was them, I would want to know about him, too."

Playing second fiddle to the whiny Urkel (Jaleel White) irked Williams at first. After all, she was one of the original cast family - mom, dad and three kids - before Urkel came along in the 12th episode (supposedly for just one guest appearance) and stole the show.

"Sure, I wish it was me all the time, that my character was that popular," says Williams. "It kind of bugged me for a little while." But now she looks at it objectively. "He put the spotlight on me. He made my part bigger. Besides, what can you do?" she asks, delivering her best imitation of a spoiled starlet: "'Well, I'm not going to act here unless I get my way...' That's kind of unprofessional."

Williams no doubt also knows that the success of the show's geek-next-door helped propel the ABC Friday night sitcom into a hit that ranks frequently among the top ten shows in prime time. In fact, the fame of the pint-sized Romeo has got to the point where people often recognize Williams and whisper, "That's Urkel's girlfriend," although, as she points out, "Laura rejects him all the time on the show."

Still, she predicts that Urkel's fantasies someday will be fulfilled. "I do think Laura loves him," says Williams. "She loves him for the way he loves her. I think in time she will realize Urkel will be a good person to take care of her, and she'll snatch him up quick."

That won't happen, however, until Urkel makes some major image changes. Before Laura would even begin to consider him, says Williams, "I want him to have a complete makeover. He has to pump up, get taller and change the clothes. I do wish he were more of a hunk."

Williams, a native of Washington, D.C., made her acting debut on the stage, and has since appeared in two feature films and starred in a television special. Family Matters is her first series - and her introduction into the world of teenage infatuation. Although she hasn't begun to date -"yet" - she's already very clear on one thing: no nerds. "Never. I hate nerds."

Her dislike of dweebs is somthing not shared by someone very close to Williams - her father. "My dad was a nerd," she confesses, giggling. "You go through his yearbook, and everything academic has his name, like captain of the debating team. He's un-nerdish now, but he still reads the encyclopedia. He gets mad when I call people nerds, because he was a nerd." Are he and Urkel similar? "Yeah. Urkel's so small - just like my dad." But at least, she says, "I see that they can change."

For now, Williams says she's content to bask in Urkel's shadow. "It's fine with me. I'm glad that people recognize me. They can ask about Urkel all they want. I don't care as long as I get paid. As long as I can go to Nordstrom's, go to college, get a car, buy a house. I say - 'Urkel, honey!'"
