KELLIE SHANYGNE WILLIAMS 1994
by Staci Bush 1994

Many know her simply as "Laura," the long suffering object of Steven Urkel's affection on the hit comedy program, "Family Matters." While this role that she has comprised since the show's premiere in 1989 has given her widespread notoriety, there are many facets to Kellie Shanygne Williams that are aching to bust loose.

Ms. Williams acting career began at the age of eight when she attended the Black Repertory in Washington, D.C. as a way of overcoming her shyness - a trait that today is no longer detectable. The talented actress went on to join Howard University's Children' s Theatre, acquired a local agent, and began acting in commercials and theatre. In addition to her television experience, Ms. Williams has several stage credits which include the 1988 production of the acclaimed August Wilson play, "Jo Turner's Come and Gone," "The Colored Museum," and a Maryland production of "Butterfingers Angel."

The Family Matters star was recently honored for outstanding academic and performing arts achievement by being inducted in the Hall of Stars of the Prince Georges County (Maryland) Schools for the Arts.

Last week, Sacramentans were honored when Ms. Williams made an appearance in the city at the Downtown Plaza, graciously autographing her posters and pictures for thousands of fans. Prior to this autograph signing session, the outgoing 18-year-old spoke freely to the OBSERVER, revealing the young lady behind the famous character.

Like many young adults her age, Ms. Williams loves to "chill" with good music, preferably Prince (or whatever his name is). "There isn't anyone else!" exclaimed Ms. Williams, when asked about who else she enjoys listening to in her spare time. While this passion for Prince and music in general may be stereotypical for her age group, Ms. Williams is taking her "hobby" a step further. An accomplished pianist, singer and dancer, she recently took on management duties for a female music group named Se'Kou (African for "champion' ). "The girls were really good and I wanted to help them," explained Ms. Williams in regards to her latest business endeavor. Coincidentally, Ms. Williams met gifted producer and artist, Teddy Riley, who was likewise impressed with the girls, and agreed to produce them.

Future plans for Ms. Williams includes pursuing her college education at USC and hopefully - travel. As far as acting is concerned, "I'm enjoying it right now, but if I don't enjoy it two days from now, it's over," she says.

Future plans for Family Matters includes bringing back popular character, "Stefan," the smooth sensual and sexy image created by Urkel." "They may hook up Stefan and Laura," revealed Ms. Williams, adding that she is pleased the popular show has been picked up for yet another season.

Partial proceeds raised form Ms. Williams appearance in Sacramento, sponsored by KRBK-TV Channel 31 and the Downtown Plaza, will benefit the Starlight Foundation - a non-profit charity that grants wishes to terminally ill children.
